P. 8

Any number, starting from 1, has a smaller
neighbor, called predecessor (“predecesor”), and a
         bigger neighbor named successor (“succesor”).
We note the predecessor of a number n with
n-1, and the successor with n+1.

               Aplicații

              5. Which is 999 999 999’s successor?

              6. Which is 800 000 000’s predecessor?

The counting system we use today is the
decimal numeration system (“sistemul de numerație
zecimal”) of natural numbers. It is also called the
number system based on ten (“sistemul de numerație
în baza zece”). This means that to count more
objects, they are grouped by ten, so: ten units form a
ten, ten tens form one hundred, ten hundred form a
thousand etc. Each unit of a given order is 10 times
smaller than the unit of immediately higher order.

Therefore, any natural number consisting of two or more digits can be written in the form of a sum of
         products.

             173 295 = 1 × 100 000 + 7 × 10 000 + 3 × 1 000 + 2 × 100 + 9 × 10 + 5 × 1

               Practice

              7. How can you write the number 23 601 as the sum of products?

               Curiosities about numbers

Painting based on numbers was invented by
Leonardo Da Vinci. He used this concept to teach
his students the art of color.
