Therefore, to find out the correct number of sounds in a word that contains groups of letters, you
have to split it into syllables and everything becomes very easy.

               Practice

              2. Determine the number of letters and sounds of the words:

ceas letters: ciocolată letters: gheață letters:

                            sounds: sounds: sounds:

The sound î can be pronounced through two different letters:
                  • î (from i) - if the sound is at the beginning or at the end of the words: înalt, hotărî, neînfricat;(tall,
                     decided, brave)
                  • â (from a) -if the sound is inside the word: român, cuvânt, pământ.(Romanian, word, Earth)
There are situations in which we find the letter î inside the word. But, â is never written at the beginning
or at the end of the word.

               Practice
              3. Give five examples of words that have inside it the letter î.

You have already learned that the sounds are divided into vowels and consonants according to their
pronunciation. The vowels are pronounced without other sounds’ help: a, ă, î, e, i, o, u, y, while the consonants
         need a vowel support: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, s, ș, t, ț, v, x, z.
               E, i, o, u are sounds that sometimes can’t form a syllable by themselves, requiring a vowel’s support.
         They are called semi-vowels.
                  • i semi-vowel iu-te, iar-bă, pia-tră, (fast, grass, stone)
                  • i vowel mi-nu-ne, i-no-rog, vi-se, (miracle, unicorn, dreams)
                                                    A, ă or î are never semi-vowels. Consonants and semi-vowels
cannot form a syllable on their own.
If you listen carefully to the words’ pronunciation, you will
notice that it has a syllable that is pronounced louder. The stronger
and louder pronunciation of a syllable in the word is called accent. In
Romanian, the accent has not a fixed place. Sometimes it can make the
                                              difference of the words’ meaning.
               Practice

              4. Identify the meaning of words in the following examples:

copii - copii umbrele - umbrele parcă - parcă
copies - children shadows - umbrellas as if - parking
